About our department

The Department of Museum Studies and Protection of Monuments was founded in 2004 at the Faculty of Philosophy (now - Institute of Philosophy) at St. Petersburg University, with assistance of The State Hermitage Museum.

Academic Staff

Nowadays museum is a rapidly developing cultural institution. Recent achievements in the field of communication and information reveal new prospects for museum institution and museum studies. Who is a museum worker? He (or she) is a historian and a philosopher, a professional with artist's sharp eye, a connoisseur with highly developed sense of responsibility.
A graduating student has an exceptional opportunity to find an application for his (or her) thorough knowledge at labor market both in Russia and abroad.
We train specialists who keenly feel and perfectly understand culture, who can catch and evaluate cultural tendencies.

High level of education is based on strong qualification of department staff.

Courses are given by lecturers of St. Petersburg University, principal officers of museums and research institutes. The head of department is the director of the State Hermitage Museum, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor Mikhail Piotrovsky. During four work experiences - archeological, museum familiarization, excursion practice – students acquire firm professional skills. The result is the major skill of independent theoretical and practical work in the field of cultural values examination.
